The Department of Health's School Fruit
and Vegetable Scheme aims to supply one piece of fruit every
schoolday, to every child in England aged 4-6. The scheme,
funded by lottery money, started as a pilot in 500 schools,
and is being rolled out across the country region by region.
Redbridge is the largest distributor of
fruit under this scheme, with 12,000 individual deliveries
a week of around 2,500,000 pieces of fruit to 500,000 children
at over 4,500 schools in the West Midlands, North East, North
West, South East and South West.
In some areas this may be the only fresh
fruit the children eat; a recent survey found that one in
five children do not eat any fruit at all. Fruit is a source
of essential vitamins, minerals and fibre; it can also help
cut the risk of asthma in children.
Redbridge offers a choice of fruit
to the schoolchildren - apples, pears, "easypeeler"
oranges, bananas, carrots and cherry tomatoes. As you can
see from their smiles, the children really enjoy our fresh
fruit!
