Profile : The Dorset Blueberry Company
The
Summerfruit Company sources UK-grown blueberries between June
and October. Our largest supplier is the Dorset Blueberry
Company, run by David Trehane, Young Grower of the Year 2005.
David's grandfather planted the very first
blueberries in the UK back in 1949, having responded to an
article in 'The Grower' magazine offering 100 free blueberry
plants from Lulu Island, British Columbia. The plants flourished
on the free draining, acidic soil around his Dorset home,
and he decided to plant commercially. 1000 extra plants arrived
on the Queen Mary in 1959 and David's mother Jennifer was
instructed to collect them.
When David's grandfather retired in 1968,
he handed the management of the plantations to his son, Jeremy
Trehane, who expanded to around 8 acres. This acreage was
retained until 1998. Jennifer and her son David purchased
5 acres of the original plantations from Jeremy in 1995 and
immediately put into place vigorous development plans for
the entire blueberry business.
The Dorset Blueberry Company now grows around
28 cultivars of blueberry, with the peak season July - September.
David now cultivates 8 hectares of land, and 22 more hectares
are being planted up for future years. Additional planting
will extend the season from June-October. You can buy David's
blueberries at Marks and Spencer.
