Gaskains Open Evening Shows Growers Soft Fruit Trials

Gaskains, growers of soft and top fruit near Faversham, Kent, opened its doors on a warm evening in July, to The Summerfruit Company's soft fruit growers. Around 25 growers walked the plum orchards, raspberry and strawberry fields, tasting, viewing and comparing notes.

Eight varieties of strawberries were on view, both "tabletop" and ground-planted grown under cover, as well as 3 varieties of plum grown in the open, and 3 varieties of raspberry, grown undercover on short and long canes.

Owner Charles Gaskain, and his sons Paul and Mark, conducted a complete tour of theirgrowing operation; and a visit to the computerised packing lines where growers could see the product being packaged for consumer sale.

This grower walk, part of a Summerfruit Company programme for our growers, enabled those attending to talk with each other on technical aspects of berry growing and varietal selection, and to learn new tips and techniques.
