SOMERFIELD & REDEVA - NAMING OF NEW VARIETIES

Somerfield customers will have the chance to name their own variety of Redeva strawberry, which will be stocked in all Somerfield stores, as part of a nation-wide competition. The strawberry, grown in Egypt and Morocco, will be on sale in Somerfield stores in November 2006 until March 2007, a sister variety will then be grown in the UK for Summer 2007 when the British season starts. This strawberry variety has been chosen from over 20,000 selections, which was then whittled down to 19 varieties for further analysis. The 19 varieties were then blind tasted by industry leaders, growers, suppliers and Somerfield employees, who decided that variety '57', with it's high-quality appearance and delicious taste, was best suited to Somerfield customers. The competition will be run through the Somerfield website where customers will be invited to take part in a survey to name the variety. We'll keep you updated on the winning entry!
